Massage Treatments

Regardless of the treatment your body needs, you can relax knowing that there will be no up-charges. It's ALL therapeutic! Depending on your muscular needs, the following methods may or may not be used during your session.

Swedish

The main purpose of Swedish massage is to increase the oxygen flow in the blood and release toxins from the muscles. It shortens recovery time from muscular strain by flushing the tissues of lactic acid, uric acid, and other metabolic wastes. It increases circulation without increasing heart load. It stretches the ligaments and tendons keeping them supple and pliable. Swedish massage also stimulates the skin and nervous system and soothes the nerves themselves at the same time. It reduces stress, both emotional and physical, and is suggested in a regular program for stress management.

Hot Stones

Massage Rx Therapy practices the Native American use of hot stones. With the therapist holding the hot stones as they perform a Swedish-like massage, heated basalt stones become one with the therapist's hands to give the most relaxation for the muscle and client possible.

The heat and energy from the stones penetrate deep into the muscles to achieve a soothing and therapeutic experience. When used with specific techniques, the stones allow the therapist to release tight muscle restrictions more efficiently and with less discomfort to the client, as it softens the muscles like butter.  The therapist usually uses this technique prior to deep tissue or trigger point work.

Myofascial Release

As the practitioner performs gentle stretching and compression of the fascia and the muscles, the body relaxes and uneven tension on the fascia begins to self‐correct. This release of tension affects the entire body because all fascia is interconnected. Some patients find that strong emotions are released along with physical tension. This emotional release can be especially helpful to patients whose stress and chronic pain has a psychological component.

Sprains, strains, scarring from surgery or injury, inflammation, disease, trauma from falls, repetitive stress, and even poor posture create uneven stress on the fascia. When the fascia is stressed, it loses its flexibility and no longer moves normally when the body moves. This creates unequal tension on muscles and causes them to lock or alter the way they move. This tension can result in chronic pain. Myofascial Release uses soft tissue massage techniques to restore the flexibility of the fascia and release tension from the muscles – this is one of the primary benefits of Myofascial Release.  Occasionally, Myofascial Release is referred to as connective tissue massage.

Deep Tissue

Deep tissue massage is a type of massage therapy that focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue. It is especially helpful for chronic aches and pains and contracted areas such as stiff neck and upper back, low back pain, leg muscle tightness, and sore shoulders.

It is similar to Swedish, but the movement is slower, the pressure is deeper, and concentrated on areas of tension and pain in order to reach the sub-layer of muscles and the fascia (the connective tissue surrounding muscles).

When there is chronic muscle tension or injury, there are usually adhesions (bands of painful, rigid tissue) in muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Adhesions can block circulation and cause pain, limited movement, and inflammation.

Deep tissue massage works by physically breaking down these adhesions to relieve pain and restore normal movement. To do this, the massage therapist uses massage oil and often uses direct deep pressure. Muscles must be relaxed in order for the therapist to reach the deeper musculature.

Neuromuscular Massage

Chronic and Acute pain conditions associated with soft tissue damage or stress can be treated, minimized, and solved through proper Neuromuscular and trigger point therapy.  The technique is recognized and utilized by many healthcare providers including; Massage Therapists, Physical Therapists, Chiropractors, Dentists, and manual therapists.  A trigger point is characterized by a point of pain within the belly of a muscle and may have referring pain patterns to other areas of the body.  Trigger points develop in soft tissue when the muscle is shortened due to repetitive misuse, overcompensation, trauma such as a car accident, fall, or sports injury, and general postural misalignment.

Neuromuscular therapy helps to release trigger points by stretching the length and cross fibers of the affected tissue.  By lengthening the muscle, nerve impulse and blood flow increases, allowing proper muscle response and oxygenation.  Lactic acid builds up within the trigger point creating a ‘sore spot’, this happens when the muscle is shortened and blood flow is limited – the lack of oxygen results in a toxic buildup within the tissue.  Treating trigger points releases stagnated blood and lactic acid resulting in increased flexibility, relief from pain, and a feeling of lightness in the body.
